Why You Should Choose Better Physical Therapy

Why should I see a physical therapist?

Our Doctors of Physical Therapy specialize in treatment of musculoskeletal, biomechanical, and neurological dysfunction. That means that if you're issues involve pain, joints, muscle, tendon, ligament, nerve damage, abnormal movement, postural dysfunction, or weakness - we are the people to see. Physical Therapists are movement specialists in medicine. We can help you move and feel better.

What kind of treatments do you provide?

We perform a lot of hands-on treatment. Treatments often include: joint mobilizations, joint manipulations, massage, trigger point release, fascial release, stretching, assisted exercise, and more. Our exercise and activity interventions will progress to sport-specific and strength training for patients that require this.

We maximize your body's ability to heal itself by providing an optimal environment for healing. This includes guided exercise therapy, movement pattern re-training, motor skill development, and neuromuscular facilitation. Most of this language is fancy terminology for "re-training you how to move properly".

What conditions do you treat?

Let's break it down this way: improper movement/positioning often results in dysfunction. This can be caused by many factors. If you have pain, joint or soft tissue restriction, limited movement, weakness, balance issues, or abnormal movement, then you have come to the right place.

I have back pain. Should I see a PT?

The evidence is overwhelming for early physical therapy treatment for back pain. People who see a therapist early for back pain often have great relief and do not require surgery or have return of symptoms. If this is you, now is the time to act before it becomes a real problem.

What separates One Nine from other PT clinics?

We differentiate ourselves intentionally. Here are the top 5 ways we do things differently:

1) You only work with a Doctor of Physical Therapy to ensure that manual therapy and exercise prescription directly results in your progress.

2) We ensure communication and education result in compliance at home. After all, you are only with us for 1-3 hours per week, and with yourself the rest of the time. We are out to change the habits that got you in this position.

3) We are with you every step of the way. If your doctor needs to be called, insurance verified, consultation with a coach/trainer, or a consultation over the phone, your therapist is the one making those calls.

4) Flat-rate billing. Insurance is confusing and we work hard to make paying for healthcare simple. We also offer competitive package pricing to keep it affordable.

5) We make therapy fun - and that's not always easy.

Insurance and One Nine Physical Therapy

What makes One Nine different?

Your care extends far beyond the 30-60 minutes of 1-on-1 treatment time with the Doctor of Physical Therapy.  Becoming a patient at One Nine, you enter into an agreement that we will work together to achieve your goals.  We have a vested interest in your well-being and take this responsibility very seriously.

Do you take my insurance?

We work hard to make paying for your care simple because our clients choose One Nine for the right reasons.

We do not contract with insurance companies because honestly, they don’t pay enough. When they pay less, you get less - like with the other guys. Since we don’t contract with insurance, this allows us to:

  1. Spend all of our efforts providing you or your family member with the highest level of care

  2. Focus on your care needs instead of fighting with insurance for reimbursement

  3. Keep treating you without a lapse in care waiting for insurance authorization and payment

  4. Start right away with you to get you on the right track quickly

There is also some Good News about insurance!  Most PPO insurance plans DO cover physical therapy at One Nine. Also, we do all the work to submit claims to insurance and then they send the reimbursement checks directly to you based on your benefits. Our services ARE REIMBURSED by many plans - not the HMO ones though.  Call us and we will be happy to check your insurance benefits for free before scheduling your appointment.

Making Your Insurance Work for YOU

One Nine provides high quality physical therapy care for you or your family member without all the confusion.
Some providers such as your MD, DO, PT, or DC may be considered "in-network" with your insurance.  This means they have agreed to a lower contracted rate with insurance.  As a result, the quality of the services often suffers.  You may rarely see your therapist, be passed off to assistants, moved to a different therapist suddenly, not properly guided through exercises, or other lapses in quality.  To make matters worse, you may be required to see a doctor for a prescription and pay for more treatment than you need.

Our solutions are simple.  We do not contract with insurance companies because we work for YOU.  One Nine physical therapy services are paid on a fee-for-service basis.  We are out-of-network providers for most insurances, except Medicare.

Your dollar goes further!  Co-payments and out-of-pocket costs can skyrocket quickly in today's healthcare. A large portion of your health expenses go toward paperwork, processing, management, oversight, and other corporate mechanisms.   With One Nine, your healthcare dollars are spent directly on the services you receive, similarly to your favorite restaurant, salon, or dog groomer.

Do I need a Physician referral or prescription?

No. You are free to see a physical therapist without a referral in California. However, some insurances require a prescription to start. We are happy to call and check for you. Other insurers place restrictions on the number of visits you get per year. Be sure to check your benefits to see what your plan allows.

Questions about Scheduling

How quickly can I schedule an appointment?

We guarantee to have you scheduled within 48 hours! Our approach ensures that we have availability for our clients. We limit the number of active clients to be sure that we can accommodate your schedule and provide you with access to your therapist.

If my doctor referred me somewhere else, can I still go to One Nine?

Absolutely. You have the power to choose the best care for you, and we support that. As a consumer, you have the right to make an informed decisions. We are happy to notify your doc of the change in venue and plan on making your experience so great that they send more people our way. To help you make the right decision for you, we offer a Free Trial Session with one of our physical therapists. In this session we will answer all your questions, briefly assess your injury tell you our initial thoughts, make the right referral if necessary, and tell you about our care.

How often should I schedule?

Good question. This will be discussed at the initial evaluation and subsequent treatments. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy will consider everything about you, healing times, activity level, and expectations to determine the timeline. Our model and processes facilitate faster recovery in many cases than traditional therapy.

How far out should I schedule follow-up appointments?

We give you the opportunity to schedule 3 months out if you like. The recommendation is to schedule at least 2 weeks in advance to ensure the time slots you prefer. Because we work 1-on-1 for all services, late scheduling often means conflicts. Preferred scheduling is available to concierge clients.

Can I use my HSA card?

Yes! This is a great way to pay for our healthcare services. Using your HSA payment card will use your pre-tax money, saving you in the end. This is only available for physical therapy services, as injury prevention training is not a covered service.

Your first Physical Therapy Visit

What to do before your Evaluation

We make getting ready for your first Physical Therapy appointment fast and easy. When your Evaluation is scheduled online, over the phone, or in-person, you should receive w emails. The first is an email confirmation for the appointment. the second email is a welcome email with a link to fill out the necessary intake paperwork. We highly recommend completing this before your arrival, so we are all set to start right on time with you. Your therapist will already have read your information and be fully prepared to get you back to action.

What to wear?

Athletic clothing is best. This allows free movement (which you will be doing a lot of) and access to joints and soft tissue for the therapist. Athletic shoes are a must!

What to Bring

Bring an enthusiasm to finally get relief from your injury! Also, if you have any paperwork from your doctor or other healthcare providers, please bring that so we can make a copy - we will give you back the original if you like. Bring any videos of your sport, contact information from coaches/trainers, and other useful content for your PT.

What can I expect from an evaluation or assessment?

You should expect to get a lot out of the first session. We will guide you through the examination to determine what is wrong, what factors contribute to the issues, and how to fix them. Your therapist will perform hands-on treatment, educate you on what to do in your daily routine, and what to expect over the next few sessions. Teamwork between you and the therapist is critical in developing meaningful goals to get you back to doing what you want, quickly.

One Nine Policies

Cancellation

Cancellations are never ideal, especially since treatment plans often require regularity in scheduling, and missed appointments can means setbacks.  If you have to cancel an appointment, we require 24 hours notice by email or phone call to avoid fees. The cancellation fee is forfeiture of your deposit, or 50% of the session rate. With at least 24 hours notice, your deposit will be refunded.

Reschedule

You can reschedule with more than 24 hours notice at any time. If you choose to reschedule within the 24 window, you can do so without any fees as long as there is a time available on the same day or the next day. This is necessary to maintain continuity of care for our other clients, and we ensure you have the same courtesy.

Late Fee

We believe that early is on time, and on time is late. Things happen, but your treatment time cannot be extended. Again, this is to ensure that all of our clients are guaranteed a timely start to their care. One of our core values is that our clients do not wait in waiting rooms.

Package/Bulk Purchases

Payment for packages in full is required prior to the first visit. These rates are significantly reduced, and "leftover" visits will not be reimbursed. Transfer of remaining visits to a different appointment type upon request. Packages are not transferrable to other patients.
